Motocross round-up: Belgium win Veteran Motocross des Nations

Led by Werner Dewitt, Johan Boonan and Jan Laurysen, Belgium were overall winners of the Veteran Motocross des Nations team event staged on the former Grand Prix circuit at Farleigh Castle over the weekend.

Two team races were staged on Saturday and two more on Sunday. Tom Church, who was a British and World Championship competitor until late last year, came out on top in the under 40 class with a win, a fifth and two third places, and current day ace Kristian Whatley won three of the four races in the Evolution 250cc class. His only defeat was by Northern Irelander Gordon Crockard in the last race.

American Ryan Hughes was unbeaten in the veteran twin shock class, but even he could not prevent Belgium’s B squad from winning the Evo team event.

Tom Smith was overall winner of the BSSA’s two-hour timed trial at Beaconsfield Farm, West Harptree on Sunday. He was first to complete 16 laps of a challenging circuit. He lost just eight marks on observation on a left handed climb over ruts and roots in the second section. Charlie Frost lost two less, but he lost six marks on time.

Justin Adams, Peter King and Chris Smith all retained clean sheets on observation in the trials class, but they were pipped by Jason Hamblin, who was a shade faster, even though he dropped three marks in the third section.

Ben Lovelace was in a class of his own in the Yeo Vale Club’s Observation Only Trial at Batcombe on the Somerset-Dorset border.

Staged over four laps of a dozen sections at Hillfields, Lovelace outshone close rivals Henry Pym and Shane Lovatt in the third, sixth and tenth sections. Martin Strang took the over 50 years class win after runner-up Bill Collins had gone the wrong way in the first section.

There was no stopping Kingsbridge teenager Kelvin Townsend in the experts class in the South West Devon Club’s South West Off Road Series Motocross at Moreleigh, near Totnes. He won all three races on the undulating Farleigh Farm circuit. Nick Life was his closest challenger in the first, but the latter crashed heavily in the second leaving Darren Banwell and Mike Rowe to put Townsend under pressure.

Recently upgraded to senior status, Ryan Stonier took the class win with a win and two second places. Regan West dominated the nine to 13 age group Inter Junior races and Joe Claydon did likewise in the over 14 age group.

The Torridge club were clear winners of the expert class in the South West Centre Inter Club Team Trial at Hartland, North Devon. They finished 23 marks in front of the Otter Vale Club B team. Torridge also won the Classic Bike class.
