Bring on Mexico and Brazil
Sunday 06 May: The coming weeks will see the FIM World Motocross Championships move to the exotic countries of Mexico and Brazil and with two unknown circuits for the riders anything is possible. Geoff Meyer reports for Youthstream.
Brazil always brings technical circuits and
big jumps, but Mexico is really an unknown as far as what type of track
we can expect.
After
three rounds of the FIM World Motocross Championship have been run in
Holland, Bulgaria, and Italy the MX1 class has three different winners
in; Italian Antonio Cairoli, and Frenchmen Gautier Paulin and Christophe
Pourcel, while the MX2 class has Jeffrey Herlings (The Netherlands)
with two wins and Tommy Searle (Great Britain) with one win.

Five
times World Motocross Champion Cairoli is looking forward to visiting
Mexico and Brazil and just as he tries to do at every event he visits,
it’s not just about being a racer, but also being a tourist.
"I
really like these new countries, places like Mexico, it’s good for the
sport and it’s also nice to see the different cultures and explore
different things. I try to visit the country and not just go from one
hotel to the next. Mexico seems like a pretty cool place and we will
make sure we enjoy it.”
Of
course American Michael Leib has also been invited back to the Monster
Energy Yamaha team of Steve Dixon and Leib will be looking to improve on
his podium finish at the Grand Prix of Italy last weekend. Leib will
again fill in for the injured Arnaud Tonus and Zach Osborne.
This
will be the first Grand Prix of Mexico and while Mexico has had a
number of good riders in the past, they are yet to claim a Grand Prix
victory, or have a World Motocross Champion. Former FIM World 125cc and
250cc Motocross Champion Sebastien Tortelli of France has worked hard to
make sure that the Mexican people can enjoy a special event when the
Grand Prix of Mexico arrives on May 12 and 13.
"We
have put a lot of work into this event and I know from races I have run
in the past the Mexican riders and people really love their Motocross. I
had an International race in Mexico and that was a big success with
riders like Stefan Everts racing in it. I know it’s a new Grand Prix,
but it is a very special race as we have never seen the leading MX1 or
MX2 riders in this country and that is going to be really interesting.”
With
the MX1 class full of possible GP winners and the MX2 class really
hotting up with Herlings and Searle in tough battles, anything is
possible in Mexico and Brazil and it won’t be long before all the
leading FIM World Motocross Championship riders start to board their
planes for these countries as the sport gets another breath of fresh air
from two new circuits on the GP calendar.
