The Week That Was

Timaru’s Round 1 of the 2012 NZ Motocross Nationals is only a week away - Sunday 12 February:

Couple of interesting entries.
  • Daryl Hurley has entered MX2
  • Aussie Todd Waters Australia RM450
  • Another Aussie Geran Stapleton Australia CRF250R who was here for the Supercross.
  • Not listed yet but … Richie Collins, the guy that built the tracks in the Nelson/Murchison area some time ago is back in the UK, sent me an email: "Two TVR Racing Motocross riders flew out on Wednesday to ride the NZ MX Nationals. Hayden Wilkinson, a Kiwi who has been racing in the UK for 2 years and Kris Ayres a UK rider who we sponsor they will arrive 2 days before the first round so hopefully we can get everything in place for them.”
  • No BT101 as yet?

Woodville.

Good reading from Justin McDonald and Luke Burkhart on:
www.moto-media.net/?id=157

Based on the Woodville results I wondered what the story was on Micah McGoldrick. I ask CMR Red Bull KTM’s Martin Collins; "Micah did an amazing job on Saturday, cleaned up all four races. Sunday, won the first senior 125 then got cleaned out in the second race and he was a bit knocked around so we parked him for the day.

Nice angle from Dick Koers.  L to R Cooper, Townley, Clark, not sure who that's on the inside but #7 is
Shannon Hewetson.

Oakland’s Round 4:

  • You are probably going to watch it on Sky’s ESPN CH34 at 10pm tonight but ... you can also watch it 5-6pm Saturday.
  • James Stewart kept the pressure on Chad Reed and went past at the halfway point of the main and went on to win by 2.5secs.
  • Ryan Dungey came from 10th early in the main to fourth at the finish. That was the first time he'd missed the podium this season.
  • Ryan Villopoto said he got tight in the middle of the main, and Reed crept away from him. But other than last week in L.A. where he was fourth, he's been on the podium every weekend so far.
  • During Oakland AMA Supercross, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki Lites rider Tyla Rattray crashed during his heat race.  Not much is made of it (including Erin Bates) but he actually broke his neck.
Here’s the official word. "The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki Supercross, the South African rider, who finished fourth in Los Angeles, third in Phoenix and second in the season-opener at Anaheim, suffered a concussion and fracture to his C7 vertabrae in practice at Oakland’s Round 4. Due to the injury, Rattray was forced out of Oakland, and will now need four weeks to recover."
  • Tyla Rattray: "I'm really bummed out about my injury, but I'm very thankful that it didn't end up worse. I just want to thank everyone for their tremendous support. Hopefully I'll be back soon."
  • Checkot Marvin Musquin's crash in the Lites main event.  Not the speed that hurts it's the dead stops!.  So annoying that they pronounce him 'Moose Can' - it's 'Muss Quin'.

The California Superbike School
.The February dates are the only dates scheduled for the school in NZ for 2012. CSS is the worlds premier brand in Motorcycle rider training and we have trained more riders than any other organisation in the world. These riders range from relatively new road riders up to racers at World Championship level and everybody in between. You do NOT have to ride a Superbike to attend these days, if it has two wheels an engine and gearbox, then this school is for you. So if you want the best rider training available, then look no further. We only have the following dates available in 2012:

  • Monday February 6th (Waitangi Day) Only 2 places available – either Level 2 or Level 4
  • Tuesday February 7th - Places are still available in all Levels

To book your space, please go to www.californiasuperbikeschool.co.nz/category_product.php or phone the office on (09)412 6266 if you have trouble on line. For more information on the school, go to www.californiasuperbikeschool.co.nz or if you have any questions, please phone us in the office.

Enjoy the ride. Darren Sweetman.

Ponca City came to Kiwi’s attention in 2011 when Courtney Duncan went there and beat most of the the boys.

There has been a big falling-out between race Founder Ron Hendricksen of the NMA and the local community leaders who host the NMA Grand Nationals.

Ron’s has up and moved to nearby Norman and the locals are looking for a new promoter. Problem is both have scheduled the week of 22-28 June! (Source: RacerX’s Racerhead)

Road 2 Recovery Foundation.
In the fall of 2000 Bob Moore, Bob Walker, and Jimmy Button created the Road 2 Recovery Foundation, a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization to enhance the sport of motocross through assistance to AMA licensed professional Motocross and Supercross riders who sustain career ending injuries.

Jimmy Button lived and breathed motorcycles and had his whole future ahead of him. He was 26 years old and was starting his 10th year as a professional rider, and his 2nd year with factory Yamaha. However, on January 22, 2000 his whole life would drastically change in a split second.

While practicing for the evening's Supercross at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Jimmy went down in the whoop section and immediately went numb. As Jimmy lay there the fans and his teammates watched silently as he was carried off the track. That evening his family and friends were told he would probably never walk again. He had bruised his spinal cord at his 2nd and 3rd vertebrae and was paralysed from the neck down.

What doctors did not know was how powerful Jimmy's spirit and courage was. He came back not to ride but to win something much bigger, to win the race of walking again. Following his injury, Jimmy was left in a very difficult situation, both physically and financially. Since a riders union didn't exist there was a critical need for an organization that would provide financial and emotional assistance when an extreme situation arose.

It’s now big and well organised. In 2011 it opened in Europe.

On Saturday, 05 March 2011, 19 year old Rockstar Energy Suzuki rider Ian Trettel sustained a brain injury during practice at the AMA Supercross event in Daytona, Florida. Ian is improving, but his recovery will be a long and costly process. In steps the Road 2 Recovery Foundation.

19 December 2011 Ian Trettel published an update: "Currently I am doing therapy at Shands Rehab Center in Gainsville, Florida 3-4 days per week or as much as they can get me in. I'm on my feet 24/7 without any assistance devices and I'm taking small college courses at an adult community center to brush up on some school stuff to get back into the school community as soon as I can. I'm going to the gym 3-4 nights a week and I'm getting stronger. I still obviously have a lot of work to do, but I'm headed in the right direction for sure."

Footnote:  In New Zealand we don't have a need for such an organisation as the majority of costs are covered by ACC.

Colonial Motor Company has taken over collapsed bike operation Dave Anderson Motorcycles. The dealer principal at Masterton Ford and Mazda operation, Fagan Motors, says things can't move quick enough as he works to get their latest franchise up and running.
The business went under last month with debts of over $1 million. According to the liquidators report, debts included $725,000 to the Bank of New Zealand, $72,677 to Suzuki New Zealand and $60,376 to GE Finance.
The company had been trading since 1976. The collapse has been blamed on a slowing of sales and the collapse of two significant customers in two years. Source: www.autotalk.co.nz
