Luke Smith back into Freestyle
Thursday 08 December: I had just read Fraser Davey's story on Luke in the December DRD, about life after Freestyle MX. Next day I got an email from saying he was back on the Freestyle ramps.
Luke Smith had been a pro freestyle motocrosser (FMX) for eight years
and as a Crusty Demon had toured the world.
Three years ago Luke crashed head first, suffering a severe
traumatic brain injury on the eve of 2008. I went to see him in those early days of rehab - he was not good, I came away in tears.
Luke's partner, model and TV presenter Katy Thomas, never left Luke's side,
re-teaching him how to walk and talk. Katy encouraged him to
develop his creative streak.
Out of this Moto Mayhem was born, a 'go to whoa' graphic design business, an outlet and inspiration for someone who knows the motor industry inside out ... and upside down.
Luke takes up the story:
"
As the title of this email says, I am officially back in the
game. I've been shooting the first part of a new TV Commercial for
Berocca Performance, that will air shortly in New
Zealand and Australia.
For the commercial I have been jumping a nice 80ft dirt
double, built and sculpted to perfection by track builder Carl Sorenson.
I have been playing around a few times lately but got my written
clearance by the doctors yesterday, and Tuesday was my fourth
ride in 3
years and boy did it feel good to start busting some tricks. Katy (www.iamkatythomas.com) and Luke are now engaged.
The foam pit will be running again readying for my Big
Air Boot Camp training courses set for the start of the New Year and time for me to
get upside down on a dirt bike again.
Check out some pictures from the days, sorry about the quality!

Just had an update from Lukel: "
I have been flat-out over the last couple of weeks with shows as I put
together the whole action arena this year at Big Boys Toys and have now 'sealed
it' for the next 3 years. We then travelled to India to put on a FMX show in Dehli
which was a wild trip but have lots more shows over there now which is great.
Then the day after I flew in for two days I have been shooting this tvc.
So life has been hectic, but great to be back on a bike and great to be doing
tricks again. I have been riding a few times but mainly
just play riding at tracks to get the feel of things, this time jumping on a
450 which is feeling great.
So when I rolled up to shoot the commercial
to see the amazing 80ft dirt kicker Carl Sorenson had built looked like a dream
come true that man can sure built great jumps. First hit over a big kicker in 3 years I landed
perfect and third jump in I started busting tricks they all seemed to
come flooding back. I was tempted to flip it but I figured I would wait and
make sure can do a couple good ones on the 450 into the foam before I took it
to dirt.
Speaking of the foam pit we have been
working on getting it all made wider and set up again for me to train and also from
January 2012 I will be running Big Air Boot camp training days on getting
riders jumping and helping them out with bike setup body position and also some
foam pit action.
Word spreads fast, I have already had
offers for some international rides in 2012 but for now just taking it day by
day and having fun, as Christmas is a busy time of year with the Moto Mayhem
Custom Graphics, as they make great presents and have a Christmas discount on
all decals ordered before the 20th of December.

Here is another picture from the day to
see the size of the kicker. Also a shot from me in car from Big Boys Toys
drifting.
