Tokoroa - Round 1 of the NZ Supercross Championship.

Sharon Cox comments:

  • I was at the Start so did not see everything but ....
  • Awesome job by the Club - track was mint - they had put a lot of work into it - 'upped' what had been done in previous years.
  • The container jump had gone - tricky triple - tabletop into a single, into a left hand berm - riders spent considerable time getting their lines right - seat bounce into it seemed to be the favoured option.
  • Drizzled mid afternoon and had some showers.
  • Drizzle did not really affect the track - little greasy - not skatey.
  • Whoops were excellent.
  • Mason Phillips night was over early after he collided with Brad Groombridge from behind - I 'suspect' it was a collarbone.
  • Quite a few Practice accidents - several injuries which caused some delays.
  • John Phillips was injured - ain't it the way ? his parents, Barbara and Dennis were away at an Anniversary.
  • Josh Coppins was Riders Representative and his presence seemed to add a real professionalism to the event.
  • Only approx 1200 spectators as opposed to 2500 last year.
  • There was a TV crew present ?
  • Isaiah McGoldrick was out with mechanical problems.
  • Jesse Wiki out with mechanical problems.
  • Shootout was really one and a half laps which made it more interesting.
  • Ethan Martens had a 'mean' shootout with Brad Groombridge who he chased to the line.  Ethan then crashed in the first Moto which ruined his points chase.
  • Justin McDonald rode very, very well and quickly into the rhythm - beat Josh Coppins in the shootout when he got the jump on him.
  • Racing was awesome - some mean inside passes - jumps side by side - it was very intense - some of the best racing I have seen.
  • Josaih Natzke took 3 from 3.  Those 85cc riders were very gutsy, all attacking the big jumps.
  • James Anderson was a deserved winner in the Junior 250.  He never got one holeshot but came through each time.
  • Hayden Clark surprised when he won the first Open race.
  • Non Qualifiers got to race which was great for them.
  • Top five in the Lites was:  Scott Columb 57, Brad Groombridge 48, Peter Broxholme 40, Jayden Jessup 39, Craig Smith 35 and on the same points in 6th was Nick Saunders 35.
  • Top five in the Open was: Josh Coppins 57, Justin McDonald 47, Cody Cooper 43, Hayden Clark 42, Michael Phillips 39.
  • Excellent fireworks display from Dave Craig topped off a great night - pity not more spectators.
  • Finally, I think our riders are far better prepared without having the MX Nationals prior to the Supercross - it could be argued that it's not the case but going on last night, our guys were sorted, so that has to a plus in my opinion.

Bryan Davidson,
Chairman of the Mini, Junior & Senior Supercross & Motocross Commission.

  • Bags of praise to the South Waikato MCC.
  • Excellent atmosphere.
  • Great having 'springboarded' off the Australasian Supercross series.
  • Pity about the rain - that affected numbers - 30 minutes down the road at Taupo they had no rain.
  • Fortunately the Club had not overwatered so it was quite rideable.
  • Having more Supercross tracks available showed in the performance of the riders.
  • Riders coming to the realisation of what Josh and Ben have pushed, in that you must have both skills to advance.
  • Josh thought the MX2 / Lites races were as exciting as he had seen.

I asked Bryan how John Phillips was ? "His front wheel tucked under and he hit the dirt.  I spoke to Mike (his brother) and he said that he had all the tests and would be okay."

I also asked him about the presence of a TV crew ? "It's a Telesport crew and they will cover all the rounds. Jamie McCarthy is the Presenter.  There will be a snippet on tonight's news.  They are doing a one hour package for for TV1 and it will also be on Bike Rider TV and SKY."

Any other comments you would like to make ?  "It was a good start to the series with some excellent racing.  We have, for the first time ever, a Prize Pool of $10,000.  I'm looking forward to Round 2 at Taupo on the 2nd of January."
