Auckland's Price Road Motocross Track gets the green light
Thursday 18 December: On 28 May I ran the story about Carl Sorenson's plans to develop a track at Colin Dale Park on Price Rd out near the Auckland International Airport.
The reference for that story was http://www.moto-media.net/?id=3045
Carl has long been waiting on the Auckland SuperCity to build
and run a Motocross Track at Colin Dale Park on 10 acres at Price’s Road, Puhinui - just 10 minutes south/east of the Auckland International
Airport.
The original deal was
done with Manukau City but the Resource Consent has been held up due to the 8 Council’s
merger into one SuperCity. Other sports in the assigned park are KartSport, BMX, Off-Road Racing, Jet Sprinting and Radio Controlled vehicles.
As a background, Colin Dale was a
long-serving Manukau City Manager and in 2003 he and the then Mayor Sir
Barry Curtis ear-marked the $4 million plus plus purchase as a dedicated
motorsport venue.
This year it got going again, including
Resource Consent and sub-leases to approved operators. Then SuperCity
Mayor Len Brown, put all 'special projects' on hold when the budget
pressures came on.
In steps the Otara-Papatoetoe Board who has released the funding to call for immediate tenders for the basic earthworks and infrastructure.
This is all good news
for Motocross and Carl, himself a skilled track builder with all the right earthmoving equipment, will ultimately have a 7 days a week facility.
The KartSport site is where Ardmore MX's John Cobb ran a hugely successful 'open terrain' event several years ago. Kartsport have big plans and importantly, the funds to build a multi-track complex of a 1500m main track, a
second 800m club track and a 600m hire kart track, each able to run
independently of the other at the same time.
