12 Sep: Canard wins 250 Class Championship at Pala. Dungey caps historic rookie season with his tenth win.

Pala, California - the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship came to an exciting conclusion on Saturday, returning to San Diego County for the first time in 28 years with the inaugural Pala Motocross National from Pala Raceway.

450/Motocross Class: In the premier 450 Class, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey etched his name in the record books with his 10th overall win of his rookie season. Dungey entered the day looking to break Ricky Carmichael's rookie record of nine overall wins that has stood since the 2000 season. Having wrapped up the 450 Class title two rounds ago to become the first rookie in history to win both the AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross championships, he continued his dominant form on Saturday by sweeping the day's motos.

"I didn't get off to the best of starts in the second moto and I had to work," said Dungey. "Patience definitely plays a role in it and I've learned a lot about that in recent years. It was new track and it was really good. It got rough and I think we all really liked it."

In addition to winning the most races ever by a rookie, Dungey also surpasses Carmichael's rookie point total by eight points ending the season with a record 543 markers. Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short finished 2nd (3-2) with GEICO Powersports Honda's Brett Metcalfe (Australia), in 3rd (2-3).

250/Lites Class: After a dominant second half of the season, GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard secured his first career Motocross Championship in the 250 Class with a third-place finish on the day.  The unpredictable nature of the 250 Class was on full display at Pala as rookie Dean Wilson (Scotland) raced to his second career victory with a 1-1 moto sweep for Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki. However, Wilson's triumph was overshadowed by the stellar come-from-behind championship win by Canard.

Coming into the season finale, Canard trailed Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel (France) by seven points. As the duo battled in the first moto, both riders experienced trouble in separate crashes, but Pourcel's resulted in a separated shoulder and when he failed to return to compete in the second moto, his championship hopes were over.

"There's so many emotions and thoughts running through my head," said Canard, who won five of the final seven races of the season to overcome a 57-point deficit to Pourcel. "When the time came, I thought about all these hard years and it made it that much better. I'm still kind of dreaming right now. I'm just stoked."

Canard joined Wilson on the overall podium in 3rd (4-3), while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Tyla Rattray (South Africa) earned the runner-up spot (2-2).

Trey Canard just couldn't hold in the emotions any longer. The unflappable Oklahoman had just wrapped up the season title in the 250cc class of the Lucas Oil AMA Motorcross Championship on Saturday at the Pala National. It was the culmination of three years ups and downs, and Canard became choked up while thanking everyone who had made his championship possible.

"There are so many emotions going through my head right now," Canard said. "It's unbelievable, and I'm thankful for every opportunity that's taken place. It's been a lifelong goal and a lifelong dream. It's weird, all those experiences and all those tough times come to you. I try to be a humble guy, and attack each race and use it for what it's worth."

Canard trailed Christophe Pourcel by seven points in the championship standings to start the day. Both riders started the first moto strong, but Pourcel suffered a nasty crash, separating his shoulder. Pourcel had a DNF in the first moto and couldn't answer the call in the second. Canard’s third overall on the day sealed the title for the Geico Powersports Honda team.

"I might need a couple of days to get my real reaction," Canard said as he gripped his No. 1 plate. "This team is getting so awesome. I'm bummed that this is my last ride for these guys. To be a part of this with the GEICO Powersports Honda guys is fantastic. They've worked year in and year out to reach this level."

The Motorcycle USA.com Women's Motocross Championship brought it 2010 season to a close as well with the Dunlop Tire Pala Women's National. After a dominating season, DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha's Jessica Patterson captured her record sixth WMX Class title en route to a runner-up effort at Pala (1-2). Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek took her second win of the season (2-1) with MotoConcepts Yamaha's Vicki Golden, of El Cajon, Calif., in third (3-6).
