YZ450F Project Bike - JTR Suspension After having more than a month on the bike, all was going well and the
improvements were all excellent. I was however having some issues with the
suspension, being winter and riding mainly sand tracks, choppy tracks were becoming an
issue, especially with long sessions and races. I was finding the forks were giving me a
hammering and the result being my shoulders would ache for days afterwards.
Aucklander and fellow rider John Turner overheard me talking about the issues I was having and offered to help out. John successfully runs his own business offering motorcycle repairs, servicing and suspension and being a rider himself he has the ability to relate a lot better as to what riders are experiencing and how they can improve it. So John came out to watch my next race and said straight-away that he could see what my issues were and knew just how to fix them, so the bike was his for a few days to make some changes. John Turner: "Up
front the stock forks tend to run low in the stroke and have a harsh overall
feel. I adjusted the fork valving to run higher in the stroke giving it a
plusher feel while increasing front-end traction." "The stock shock tends to overpower the front. I made some internal changes to the shock piston and valving to let it settle into it's stroke better, balancing out the bike and increasing cornering control whilst providing a plusher overall ride that doesn't blow through or bottom out.” And the result? A new bike! Not only did it stop pushing into corners as it now longer dipped the front end under brakes giving you the feeling you were going to wash out. Instead it tracked across the braking bumps, sitting much lower in the rear end giving me the ability to attack the corner more and getting on the gas faster.
