Woodville - Seniors and Vets

Dick Koers:
  • A perfect day for Motocross.  Dry and overcast with a strong westerly wind that helped blow the dust away.
  • Saturday night's Ride Culture Freestyle Jam in the Square at Palmerston North, that featured the comeback of Levi Sherwood, attracted approx 5000 spectators.
  • Back to Woodville, there was a good crowd in attendance especially at the step-up into the 'bowl'.
Dick said there was plenty of comment that for a GP status, 10 mins practice and 20 minute total elapsed time races is simply too short. Coppins total elapsed time in Race 2 was only 17:49.589.  These riders head into the four round Nationals in three weeks and will be doing 30 minutes plus 2 laps.

There was controversy in MX2's  Race 2 when Luke Burkhart jumped the start not once, but twice and was excluded from the race.  The argument continues on Facebook including pics of other riders disputing the start.

CDR/Rockstar /Yamaha from Australia (aka Craig Dack Racing) were in attendance making sure that everything was okay for Josh Coppins YZ450 as he is doing both the NZ and Australian Nationals that cross over.  Team owner Craig Dack and Gary Benn, the builder of the bikes, were both there.  A dominant force in Australia CDR run both Jay Marmont and Cheyne Boyd.

Sharon Cox caught up today with Manawatu-Orion Motorcycle Club Spokesperson Carmen Davidson - wife of Club President Bryan Davidson who was out cleaning up out at the track.

"Brilliant, fabulous three days of racing marking the 50th Anniversary of the Grand Prix event at Woodville.  Mother Nature has been kind to us.  We had an excellent turn-out of spectators, up from previous years. With approximately 650 rider's competing on the natural terrain track, racing was the best ever, even given the fact that the wind had picked up by Sunday.

Sharon added: "Capping a successful reunion of motocross icons, main sponsor Blue Wing Honda's Paul Stewart expressed great appreciation to the club for a ‘most professionally run event'. An A Team effort of dedication and commitment would certainly make 2012 New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix an exciting event to look forward to. Enthused and motivated to move forward Manawatu-Orion M.C.C will hold this unique event at the same venue in the New Year. Giving no home advantage to any rider, Woodville remains marked on the Motocross calendar as one competitive event, not to be missed."

Excellent coverage of Woodville on One Sports tonight.  http://tvnz.co.nz/one-sport/update-b-video-3343718  about halfway through. Not often Motocross makes the news. VMX features as does Tim Gibbes.  Josh commented that he was 34 next month and more importantly that he was a father for the second time that morning.  Wife Lisa had given birth to their second daughter who they have called Elsie - congratulations to both.

Grand Prix MX1 Race 1:

  • 35 entries so straight in practice / qualifying.
  • Hayden Clark, who along with Justin McDonald were 2 secs faster in practice had a shocker start and started out 26th. He finished 90 secs down in 11th.
  • Justin McDonald led for 5 laps.
  • Josh Coppins won by 2.269 sconds from Cody Cooper. Cooper was 7th at Lap 1.
  • It was 18 secs back to Justin McDonald and 13 secs back to Michael Phillips who had Shaun Fogarty less than 2 secs behind him.
  • Jesse Wiki went from 5th to 9th to 26th to 27th then a DNF.
  • Ollie Sharp was another who had a bad start with 24th and came through to 14th.  He dns Race 2.
  • Every rider has a story to tell but we can't cover it all here.

Grand Prix MX1 Race 2:

  • Josh Coppins led from start to finish but it was close, only 0.627 to Cody Cooper.
  • Michael Phillips was 9 secs back and Justin McDonald another 30 secs back.  Justin had held 2nd for 5 laps.
  • Again Jesse Wiki dnf'd when 7th on lap 6.
  • Hayden Clark had another tough start - 11th at lap 1 and finished 7th.

Grand Prix MX2:

  • 64 entries so qualifying was in two groups.
  • Three significant names missing.  Brad Groombridge, Damien King (who are both out with injury) and Scott Columb who has just had an operation on his ACL.  Darryll King was more than happy to step into Damien's place.
  • Qualifying. No surprise that Luke Burkhart was fastest by almost a second.
  • 2nd fastest was the 18 year old visitor from Antwerp (Belgium) Jeff Cloots, who is out here supported by Mike McLeod from Maidstone Yamaha.  Cloots is ranked 10th in Belgium in the MX1 Class but is shifting to MX2.
  • 200th of a second behind him was the 42 year old Darryll King.  Next was Daryl Hurley and Cam Dillon.
Grand Prix MX2 Race 1:
  • there was 8 dnf's including Cloots on lap 6.
  • Luke Burhart led from start to finish with Cam Dillon only 1.3 secs behind. Half a second back was DK and it was another 4 secs to Kayne Lamont.
  • Jonathon Martelli had a tough start at 24th then moved up to 13th.
Grand Prix MX2 Race 2:
  • 9 dnf's this time including the disqualified Luke Burkhart.  Daryl Hurley was out in lap 4 when in 2nd place. Cloots was out on lap 8.
  • DK led from start to finish and once Hurley was gone it was Kayne Lamont by 3.2 seconds.
  • Then it was half a second to Cam Dillon who had come through from 6th, then 9 secs to Nick Saunders.
  • Jonathon Martelli had another tough start at 19th then moved up to 11th.

Tararua "Explore the Elements" River Race

  • 17 starters for this crowd pleaser where they race down the river bed and sometimes fall off into the water - much tro everyones delight.
  • The favourite had to be Paul Whibley but it wasn'y to be.  In Race 1 his engine sucked water in through the oil breather. In Race 2, after the Le Mans type start, his bike would not start and when it did he was a lap down.

Blue Wing Honda - Invitation International

  • The Top 40 riders, regardless of class/capacity are invited to compete.
  • Mike Phillips had it in the bag and at the very last left hander before the finish line he went down in the rut.  He had enough of a buffer to remount and cross the line in 2nd place.  They even featured it on One Sport at 6.30pm tonight.
