Thousands of riders and their families descended on the rural city of Horsham, Victoria this week to take part in the 39th annual Australian Junior Motocross Championships.

This year saw almost 350 riders line up to do battle at the Horsham Motocross Arena and only 13 go home with a coveted national Australian motocross title.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hugh Delahunty was at the track during the event and said it was great to see a national championship of this calibre in his local electorate.

"This is where it starts, junior athletes coming together to compete at a national level and prepare themselves to become champions – right here at the Dooen racetrack in Horsham.” Delahunty said.

In a week of intense racing, spare a thought for the race officials who dropped the start gates and waved the chequered flag 106 times during the six days of motocross racing.

The championships are one of the biggest events on Motorcycling Australia’s national calendar, taking place in a different state each year. Horsham was chosen to follow up Coolum, Queensland’s success last year and have set a new benchmark in the event’s success.

Motorcycling Australia CEO, David White said junior motocross continues to go from strength to strength in Australia and the junior nationals would continue to provide an annual showcase of Australia’s talent in the motocross discipline.

As the dust settled over the Horsham Motocross arena on Friday afternoon, parent’s loaded their kid’s bikes onto trailers, bound for home, some as far away as Western Australia. Race officials finalised the overall results, club volunteers began taking down signage that prominently announced KTM as the new sponsors and the kids, went back to being kids and played while the sun still shone on an amazing spring day.

7‐9 years 50cc:  In the littlies, it was a Queensland whitewash with Deegan Mancinelli dominating the week winning
all five rounds and taking his maiden AJMX title with a perfect point score of 125. Mancinelli was
joined on the podium by Zachary Watson and Jackson Camilleri.

7‐9years 65cc: A perfect week for Queenslander Brad West who won five out of five races to bring home his AJMX
crown with 125 points. After a tough fight, it was Senna Agius who took the second step on the
podium and Jack Kitchen who took third in the class.

9‐11 years 65cc: Young gun Jett Lawrence proved a step up in age class made no difference as he brought home the 9
to 11 year crown this year to sit next to his 2012 crown. Thundering home in second place was
Victorian, Liam Andrews with Tye Jones from Queensland rounding out the podium.

9‐12 years 85cc/150cc: Queenslander Mason Rowe proved he was the one to beat winning all three rounds and taking out
the championship 16 points clear of second place winner, Rhys Budd. Mason Semmens finished third,
a mere two points behind Budd.

11 – 13years 65cc: Oakdale junior, Rhys Budd added to his collection of Australian Championship crowns finishing a near
perfect week of racing winning four out of five rounds. Tasmanian, Brodie Ellis came home 13 points
behind the champion and Mason Rowe finishing in third.

12‐14years 85cc/150cc: In one of most hotly contested races of the championship with the most amount of entrants but it
was Tasmanian rocket Wade Kirkland who took championship glory in the end. With only a few points between the top five riders, Cody Dyce finished two points ahead of New Zealander Wyatt Chase who put in a solid effort for the final step on the podium.

12 – 16 years 85cc/150cc Girls: It was Queensland dynamo Chelsea Carter who took charge of the girls and proved she will be one to watch in 2014. Ashleigh McCormick finished in second with 102 points and Amy Bartsch pipped Danielle Foot to the finish line and took home the bronze.

13 – 15 years 125cc: In one of the most exciting races of the championship, Victorian hero, Jed Beaton etched his name in
the record books, beating 2012 champion Wilson Todd by a mere three points. Western Australian, Conner Tierney raced home and narrowly beat New Zealander Josiah Natzke by two points.

13‐15 years 150cc
:  Honda rider, Egan Mastin was on fire in the 125’s collecting the title with a haul of 75 points. Jed Beaton came home strong but only managed to secure the silver and Wilson Todd swept up the bronze.

15 years 125cc: After a week of intense motocross action, it was Dylan Heaton who asserted his authority in the end, wrapping up a Junior Australian title with 117 points out of a possible 125. Queenslander, Nathan Crawford finished five points behind on 112 and Wayde Carter coming home third.

15 years 150/250cc: It was the race everyone wanted to win but in the end it was KTM protégé Wayde Carter who blazed
into the winners books winning two out of three rounds – securing his crown. Nathan Crawford finished in second place only six points behind and 125cc title holder, Dylan Heaton rounding out the podium.

13‐16 years Girls:  After a shaky start to the week, title defender and current Victorian junior female MX Champion,
Emma Milesevic came home strong winning the final three races and reclaiming her crown as Australia’s top junior female rider. Ashleigh McCormick impressed again and took home her second silver of the championship with South Australian, Amy Bartsch hot on her heels and finishing one point behind on 103.

14 – 16 years 85cc/150cc: It was Queenslander and 2012 AJMX champion, Kaleb Barham who dominated the 14‐16 year class coming home first in five out of five rounds and securing another Australian championship title. Tyler McCoy from the Northern Territory came home second after a week of consistent racing results and Travis Silk from New South Wales who took home the bronze.

8 Titles cap a spectacular KTM Junior Nationals
KTM Australia’s passion for competition and the advancement of Australian motorcycle sport has ensured a memorable first effort as naming rights sponsor of the KTM Australian Junior Motocross Titles. The week-long event, which concluded on Saturday at Horsham in Victoria, saw almost 350 competitors take part to crown 13 Australian Champions.
Eight of those champions were KTM racers:

  1. Wayde Carter (15yrs 250cc),
  2. Kaleb Barham (14-U16 BW 85cc/150cc),
  3. Chelsea Carter 12-16 BW 85/150cc,
  4. Wade Kirkland 12-U14 BW 85/150cc,
  5. Mason Rowe 9-U12 SW 85cc,
  6. Rhys Budd 11-U13 65cc,
  7. Jett Lawrence 9-U11 65cc,
  8. Deegan Mancinelli 7-U9 50c Div 2.

KTM Australia has a long history grooming talented youngsters to become stars of tomorrow, as evidenced by the recent Aussie MXoN team, in which both Brett Metcalfe and Todd Waters were former KTM Juniors. Off the track, KTM threw its weight behind several key features which added value for not only competitors, but also supporters, friends and family at home …wherever home may have been.

KTM partnered with My Sport Live to produce KTM TV, a one-hour ‘panel’ show on Thursday, featuring some of KTM’s most notable faces, followed by a live commentary across the entire final day of competition as the new raft of Aussie junior champions was crowned. If you missed either, they can be viewed www.facebook.com/KTMaustralia

A competitor-support presence at the event included the KTM Technical Service truck for setup advice and support as well as the KTM Spare Parts Service (in conjunction with Geelong’s Moto Tech KTM). Motorex KTM race team physiologist Tim Cole and Motorex KTM Team Manager and KTM Technical Services Manager for Australia and New Zealand Rob Twyerould were also there offering advice to competitors.

Kenny Watts - Horsham MCC President:  "Everyone’s been saying to me that this has been the best Aussie titles ever. I pushed for KTM to be the sponsor because as a major player in junior racing I knew they wouldn’t be happy to just put their name on it.
The tech services truck helped keep a lot of riders in the race when they ran into trouble, and the podcasting and live streaming impressed a lot of people, and gave opportunities for the riders’ friends and families who couldn’t come to the event to follow their progress in the finals. It was where we hoped to take the event and it was all positive stuff.”

Greg Chambers - KTM’s Marketing Manager:  "The track and facilities that the club turned out were really something to be proud of and the track held up really well. It’s clear that the Horsham Club has done a huge job - the pit areas and club rooms were just sensational too. Our KTM TV finals day telecast drew 6000 views and the panel show another 1000 so thank you to Andrew Weiss from Mysport live and Kevin Williams from WEM and the MX Nats. Thanks also to Kevin Doyle and Mick Carusi from the KTM Tech Service who helped hundreds of kids with big and small issues working 12- to 14-hour days, also to KTM Race Tech and Roland Ward from KTM spare parts service who helped a few people out of a few pickles. Thank you and congratulations to all the KTM champions, you all presented fantastically and to Glenn Macdonald who was having his last Junior Nats as Motorex KTM Junior Team Manager - thanks for all your effort and support and congratulations on your 54th number one plate in the seven years you’ve been with us.  KTM Australia is the naming rights sponsor for the next three years and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event at Appin.”
