Catching up ... with Darryl Atkins

I came came across this in a release from JT Racing this morning. Ran the video and there he was!!

Darryl is the younger brother of Greg Atkins who is Youthstream’s Track Manager. Some of you will remember Darryl and his wife Heather at Summercross in Whakatane over a decade ago.

In 2010 Motorcycling New Zealand awarded their dad, Robin, a Life Membership. This was recognition as a racer and organiser, MNZ Steward and founder member of the South Waikato Motorcycle Club.

Darryl's MX/SX career was derailed by a near fatal van accident in 1994 where he almost lost his right arm. He later discovered Supermoto and his first race came in Jan. '04. His second place finish in the 2005 AMA Supermoto Unlimited class does not indicate how close that championship was - it came down to a take-out late in the final race of the year. Darryl set a trend by being the first Aprilia sponsored rider in the AMA Supermoto series racing the twin-cylinder Aprilia SXV 550. He was last seen competing at the Wanganui's Cemetery Circuit in 2008, where he still holds the outright Super Motard lap record.
